Outdoors: A Few Short Hikes to Open the Summer Season

The sun is out and your hiking boots are staring at you from the shoe rack. Has it been a few months since you’ve had a chance to get out and explore?  Here are a few hikes that can get you back into the swing of things:

Pilot Butte

This hike is a must for any Bend resident or visitor. A short mile from base to summit, the trail winds around the butte. The payoff is a spectacular view of Bend and the surrounding high desert that is not to be missed.  Plan for a sunset and you won’t be disappointed.

Deschutes River Trail (Dillon Falls to Aspen)

This section of the Deschutes River trail is perfect for nature viewing, and is short enough for those looking to get their legs back. The terrain varies from high cliffs to forest groves. Hikers have reported being able to catch glimpses of mink and beavers, so keep your eyes open and your camera ready!

Lava Butte (Newberry National Volcanic Monument)

A series of short trails let you explore the lava flows and the amazing summit that make up Lava Butte. Located just a few miles outside of Bend, this destination will get your legs working as well as provide some amazing insight to the geology of the high desert region.  Definitely worth checking out on a nice afternoon!
